To Paris, friends! Where and you,
Now brings my story!

The century of the nineteenth was in progress!
In those days theaters were in vogue,
And a stormy life since morning
There was a new hall Grand Opera
(Luxurious, magnificent, like a palace, -
Arts and architecture crown!)
Under the noise of erection of scenery
Scattered scene bustle,
The play of acting declamations
And the props are simple;
Obedient to the wand maestro
The sounds of voices
Basov, soprano, tenors,
With the many-voiced orchestra, -
The Choirmaster strictly observed
He gave instructions;
As a dandy, a choreographer
On the stage with the troupe fluttered,
And the guardian of the order, the police chief,
He walked in rows and yawned.

In intermissions, between rehearsals,
In public restrooms, dancers
Before the mirrors flaunted,
They swore, sang (as they could),
Pouring secretly indulged
And again hurried to the lesson.
Premieres, more prima donnas,
Not bothering over need,
They were only for purlins,
And they were not friendly with the troupe;
On the scene languidly floating out
On all looking from high,
They seemed to take roles
(As they say) from the ceiling.

Over a scene the life boiled:
Level with the artists in the morning
The workers took up their work, -
In his art of the master;
They changed pads, backstage,
Vzmyvaya up to the grate;
Walking along the narrow bridge
We strengthened the backs; Cornices,
Winches, blocks were checked;
The counterweights were fixed,
We lowered from papier-mache
In the space of the scene, chandaliers;
In satin, velvet drapes
They rallied the hall, and already
By noon the theater was ready
Adopt the art of connoisseurs.
